CoT:

Pray for Johnny Football’s family as his mom’s health is failing and doctors suggest she won’t live much longer.

I shared this story+quote from Tattoos on the Heart, a really great book by Father Gregory Boyle, who has worked in inner city LA with gang members for over 20 years:

Fr. Gregory Boyle (known as G to the homies) tells of a homie who had recently lost a brother and had a dream where he and G were sitting in a dark room. G had a flashlight and shined it at a light switch, the homie knew G couldn’t be the one to turn it on. The homie got up, turned on the switch, and felt that the light was better than the darkness. Reflecting on the conversation where the homie told him about the dream, G writes:

“Possessing flashlights and occasionally knowing where to aim them has to be enough for us. Fortunately, none of us can save anybody. But we all find ourselves in this dark, windowless room, fumbling for grace and flashlights. You aim the light this time, and I’ll do it the next. The slow work of God.”

I appreciate the challenge here to remember the importance of remembering that people are messy, and ultimately the best support we could give to each other can’t force anyone into growth. There is freedom here in knowing that aren’t anyone’s savior, and that we each go through periods of being the supporter and needing the support.

Naked Man Moleskin:

We are all just trying to figure it out, one step at a time.
